America’s Climate Betrayal (again)

Writer: Himani HarrellHimani Harrell

Donald Trump’s withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement is a rank and reckless betrayal of our planet and future generations. This decision serves not as a protection to America but rather as a favor to corporate polluters and a denial of science to please a base that profits through climate denial. It is a cynical ploy that puts profit for the rich ahead of long-term human survival.

The Paris Agreement is a flawed lifeline that humanity must wield to fend off climate cataclysm. The agreement epitomizes the first moment in time when, so to speak, nations of all colors came together concerning a threat that did not find any opposing or rival existential question. It is not symbolic, but a real commitment to limit global temperature rise, adapt to climate change's impacts, and support vulnerable nations to do likewise. By pulling out, Trump effectively isolates the U.S. and erodes trust with close allies, thereby emboldening other nations to shirk responsibility.

What's worse is that this is what it portends to Americans, to say nothing of communities already bearing the weight of environmental injustices. Poor neighborhoods and black communities are on the front lines of this crisis. Rising sea levels, extreme heat, and toxic air don't impact Trump's wealthy donors in the same way they devastate marginalized families. His policies are a direct attack on those who have the least power to fight back. Climate change doesn't affect everyone equally, and his decision to abandon the Paris Agreement will only deepen the existing inequalities.

And let's not forget the economic implications. Renewable energy has been one bright spot in the US economy, providing good jobs and a pathway toward innovation. In states like Texas and Iowa, wind and solar power have created thousands of jobs while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Now, Trump's obsession with propping up dying industries like coal and oil, let alone the kinds of jobs those industries would provide, takes that all one step backward. It chokes progress and hands over economic leadership to countries like China, which now stand poised to dominate the green economy. While other nations invest in the technologies of the future, Trump is shackling America to the past.

But this isn't just about policy; it's about values. When Trump pulls out of the Paris Agreement, he tells the world that America doesn't care about its obligations to others or even to its citizens. He's signaling that corporate profits matter more than clean air and water, that the wealth of a few outweighs the survival of many. This is a disgraceful abdication of leadership, and the consequences will reverberate for generations.

But this fight is far from over. The truth is, Trump's actions don't reflect the will of the American people. Poll after poll shows that the majority of Americans–Democrats, Republicans, and Independents–support strong action on climate change. Across the country, cities, states, and businesses are stepping up where the federal government has failed. Activists are pushing harder than ever, and the renewable energy sector continues to grow despite Trump's efforts to undermine it.

Trump has made it clear time and time again that he’ll stand on the wrong side of history in the fight for our future. In this second term, Trump holds more power and has more determination to end environmental protection agencies and policies. Now, more than ever, it is important for young people to get out and fight for their futures.
