He Needs to Waltz His Way Off of the Cabinet

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has been at the center of multiple controversies involving his handling of classified government information over the past two weeks. These incidents not only raise questions about his competence but also reveal a disturbing trend of dereliction of duty that compromises national security.

This whole fiasco started when Waltz mistakenly added Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, to a highly sensitive Signal group conversation. The group conversation involved senior officials such as Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Its purpose? To discuss impending military strikes against Houthi militants in Yemen. Having a journalist in this group chat led to the public dissemination of operating details, where the administration's weak security protocol was exposed, and the mission's success was jeopardized.

This was the first event of what turned out to be an alarming trend under which high-level officials appeared to prioritize convenience at the expense of security. Signal is a secure and encrypted messaging platform, but this kind of software is never immune to human error. Reckless mistakes like these weaken national security in unpredictable and uncontrollable ways.

After the leak, Waltz attempted to downplay the mishap as a simple mistake with no long-term impact. Leaking military operations to unintended audiences is so much more significant than an embarrassment. Operational security is paramount when dealing with complex foreign interventions, and this lapse in judgment puts, not just the lives of individuals on the ground in jeopardy, but also the reputation of the Trump administration as an institution.

If the Signal scandal was not enough to prove to you Waltz’s incompetence, there have been recent allegations that he and other senior officials have conducted official government business using personal Gmail accounts. While Waltz's representative claimed he made federal record laws compliant by cc'ing his formal email when work-related items come to his Gmail, the use of insecure personal email addresses for official purposes is a serious threat to security.

It is particularly unsettling that an individual in Waltz's position would so callously ignore procedures in place to safeguard this kind of sensitive information. The permissive attitude of this administration towards imposing secure communications practice is an omen for everyone from the public to the intelligence community. When government authorities feel at ease bypassing secure channels in the interest of convenience, they undermine the credibility of U.S. operations.

These incidents are symptomatic, not isolated, of a broader trend of carelessness with classified information. The use of unsecured methods of communication, either through messaging services or private email accounts, demonstrates a cavalier disregard for the stringent protocols necessary to ensure national security. Not only do such activities taint the integrity of sensitive operations, but they also erode public trust in the ability of the administration to manage the country's most sensitive information responsibly.

Worthy of note is the aspect that threats are not merely limited to American shores. Shared sensitive intelligence between U.S. government allies and partners may, in turn, become increasingly hesitant regarding the security of their contributions. International relations are based on a trust relationship, and anything deemed as American complacency concerning managing classified information will have heavy diplomatic ramifications.

Mike Waltz's habitual failures of judgment and failure to adhere to standard security protocols are a clear and present threat to national security. His actions have undermined sensitive operations and have demonstrated a disturbing trend of negligence. For the sake of maintaining the integrity and security of our nation's operations, Waltz must resign from office. The administration must take decisive action to restore public confidence and ensure that such breaches do not recur in the future.
